What is an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with additional specialized training in all aspects of eye care – medical, surgical and optical.

An ophthalmologist:

  • is licensed to practice medicine and surgery;
  • diagnoses and treats all eye diseases;
  • performs eye surgery;
  • prescribes and fits eyeglasses and contact lenses; and
  • has completed fours years of college, four years of medical school, one year of internship, and three years of residency in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders.

Always look for the 'M.D.' next to the eye care provider’s name, or ask the eye care provider about his or her credentials.
