H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD Granted the 2008 SOI Award from the Italian Society of Ophthalmology

SAN FRANCISCO – The American Academy of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce that its executive vice president, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, was awarded the 2008 SOI Award by the Italian Society of Ophthalmology for his exceptional leadership and his dedication to education in the field of ophthalmology. The Award was presented at the Plenary Hall of the Mostra d’Oltremare in Naples on Friday May 9, 2008.

“It is quite an honor to receive this distinguished award from the Italian Society of Ophthalmology,” said Dr. Hoskins, “It is a pleasure to be recognized amongst my peers for the hard work and dedication we all have in the interest of this profession.”

The purpose of the SOI award to is to recognize prominent leaders in the field of ophthalmology who have a made major advancements in the lifelong learning of the profession, and who have put their education on the forefront of the world.

According to SOI General Secretary, Matteo Piovella MD, “Dr. Hoskins has earned this award without question because of his passion for his work, his impeccable ethics, and his unwavering dedication to ophthalmic education worldwide.”

Dr. Hoskins has been the executive vice president of the Academy since January 1, 1993, after a distinguished career in private practice. He also serves as clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University Of California School Of Medicine, San Francisco. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Academy's Distinguished Service award in 1999, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and the A. Edward Maumenee award of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Hoskins is an internationally known glaucoma specialist, having authored or co-authored more than 80 publications and presented more than 300 invited lectures. He has held numerous other positions in ophthalmology, medicine and business. Among them, Chairman of St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center San Francisco, Chairman of Mercy Services Corporation, founder and Chairman of Medem Corporation, Founding Director of the American Glaucoma Society, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Eye Study Club and the American Glaucoma Society. He is a member of the International Council of Ophthalmology.
