SAN FRANCISCO—The need for ophthalmic technicians in the United States continues to grow, even though the number of potential candidates languishes. To meet this need, the American Academy of Ophthalmology on June 13 launched a new Web-based Allied Health Recruitment & Training Tool Kit. The kit is designed to help ophthalmologists meet the daily challenge of recruiting, training and retaining qualified allied health personnel. Best of all, it is offered at no charge.
It was designed in cooperation with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), the Academy and the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE), the Academy’s professional organization for practice management. This new set of Web resources provides the key tools ophthalmologists may need, including:
- sample job descriptions
- lists of places to find allied health professionals
- sample classified advertisements
- information on compensation, and more.

“JCAHPO estimates that several thousand additional ophthalmic technicians are needed in the United States over the next few years,” said Robert G. Stein, executive director of AAOE. “Our goal is to help Academy and AAOE members become more successful in their recruiting and training efforts.”
