2004 – 2005 Member Directory & Industry Guide Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Member Directory & Industry Guide on CD-ROM?

Like the print version, the CD-ROM contains all current members of the Academy. This includes active, retired, in training and international members. New members or applicants for membership in 2003 will not be listed in this version of the Member Directory. They will be listed in the 2006 – 2007 Member Directory. The Industry Guide contains a listing of ophthalmic companies and products.

Can I print, download or copy sections of the Member Directory & Industry Guide?

No, the CD-ROM is designed for viewing purposes only. The user will not be able to print, download or copy data from the CD-ROM.

The User Agreement indicates that copies can be saved onto the hard drive. Is this not the case?

The Academy was intending to allow users to download the information onto the hard drive. Because the data is copyrighted and the Academy makes every effort to protect its members from e-mail spams and an overload of mail, we decided to not allow users to download the information.

As a member, you may print from Find a Colleague in the Member Center on the Academy’s Web site. It is the same information as on the Member Directory & Industry CD-ROM.

Are all e-mail addresses active links? Which e-mail addresses are active on the CD?

No, not all e-mail addresses are active links on the CD-ROM. E-mail addresses listed in the Member Directory are not active. All other e-mail addresses on the CD-ROM are active. This includes Academy contacts and the Industry Guide e-mail addresses.

How many ways can I search for a doctor?

There are several search options. You may search by name, location such as city, state or country, specialty, practice type and by postal code. If you do not know the complete first or last name, you may put in a partial or the first three letters of the word. This applies to all search functionalities.

Is the search function similar for the Industry Guide?

For the Industry Guide, you may search by product, company name and company country.  If you do not know the complete name of the company, you may put in a partial or the first three letters of the word.

How current is the information in the Member Directory?

The update for this version of the Member Directory started in February 2003. Paper questionnaires were sent to all members with no e-mail address and a series of e-mail correspondence was made to those members with valid e-mail addresses. The deadline to submit all changes was Sept. 15, 2003. If the member submitted their changes on or before that date, the new information should be listed in both the print and CD-ROM.

What is the screen I see when I open the program that asks to login?

This is a Network screen activated because you are accessing a runtime program from outside the network.  Just click on "OK" to proceed and it will work normally.

What is the screen that says "This program is read only?" Does that impact what I can do with the program?

This program has been designed so that you can access all data on the disc but cannot download, copy, or change the information on the disc.

When I opened your program on my Macintosh, I get an error message that said "Print.  Setup cannot be completed because of an error. Do you want to cancel or continue?"  What do I do?

The program is looking for a print driver to help define the page layout, and you do not have one installed or are not connected to a printer.  You can bypass this message and open the program simply by clicking on "Continue" whenever you see the message.

If you continue to have difficulties operating the Member Directory & Industry Guide CD-ROM, please send your comments or problems to Member Services or contact them by phone at 415.561.8581.
