Dr. Cantor has served on the Academy's Sommittee of Secretaries as Secretary for Ophthalmic Knowledge since 2007.  He is the Jay C. and Lucile L. Kahn Professor of Glaucoma Research and Education, Vice-Chair for Education and Director of the Glaucoma Service at the Indiana University (IU) Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Cantor received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1980. He completed his internship at the St. Vincent Health Care Center (Indianapolis, Indiana); his residency at the Indiana University Department of Ophthalmology; and a glaucoma fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

Dr. Cantor joined the IU Department of Ophthalmology as the director of the Glaucoma Service in 1985. From 1986 to 1989, he also served as chief of ophthalmology at Wishard Memorial Hospital (Indianapolis, Indiana). In 1996, he assumed the additional role as director of the ophthalmology residency program for the department. In 1999, he attained the rank of Professor of Ophthalmology.

In his years with the department, Dr. Cantor has made significant contributions to the research, patient care, and education mission of the IU Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Cantor is recognized as one of the leading experts in evaluating new topical medications in glaucoma. He created and developed an extremely successful clinical research program and has received over 30 grants and fellowships to fund his research. He and his colleague, Alon Harris, Ph.D. developed the Glaucoma Research and Diagnostic Center, a state-wide referral center which has become the leading facility internationally for evaluating the effects of ocular blood flow. While at Wishard Hospital, Dr. Cantor established a strong residency training program and patient care service which remains a central part of the Department’s current ophthalmology residency program.

Dr. Cantor is the author of 85 articles on all aspects of ophthalmology and has given more that 250 lectures and presentations worldwide on the diagnostic and medical and surgical aspects of glaucoma care.

In addition, Dr. Cantor is an active member of numerous national eye organizations including the American Ophthalmic Society (AOS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). At the AAO Dr. Cantor served on the Glaucoma BCSC committee for 10 years as a member and Chair of the committee, before assuming the leadership of the BCSC. In January of 2007 Dr. Cantor became Secretary for Education for the AAO. He has been an associate and senior associate examiner of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and served as treasurer of the American Glaucoma Society. He is the American Medical Association member and Chair of the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Ophthalmology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Cantor also presently serves as Chair of the Council of Review Committee Chairs and is a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Strategic Initiatives Committee, Committee on Innovation in the Learning Environment, and ad hoc Committee on Non-Governmental Funding of Graduate Medical Education for the ACGME. Dr. Cantor currently serves on the editorial review boards of several ophthalmology journals.

Dr. Cantor is also active in local eye organizations and has served as president of both the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology and the Indianapolis Ophthalmological Society. In 1997, he was named Ophthalmologist of the Year by the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology. Since 1985, Dr. Cantor has been an active member of the Indianapolis-based Prevent Blindness Indiana and holds positions on their Board of Directors and as the chairman of the Medical Advisory Board.

For 21 years, Dr. Cantor has been associated with Goldman Union Camp Institute (Indianapolis, Indiana). He spends a week every summer as the resident medical director for the camp’s children and has served as Chairman of the Joint Camp Authority which oversees the camp.

Dr. Cantor and his wife, Linda, a lawyer, have three children: Robert, a college senior; Adam, a college Freshman school; and Lauren, a high school Freshman.
