
2008 Laureate Recognition Award
The Laureate Award recognizes outstanding ophthalmologists from around the world who have made exceptional scientific contributions to the betterment of eye care, leading to the prevention of blindness and restoration of sight worldwide; individuals who have developed new techniques, a seminal invention, or a new treatment accepted worldwide.
The Board of Trustees is proud to announce the 2008 Academy Laureate:
Alan C Bird, MD
Dr. Bird is recognized as a pioneer in ophthalmic research, teaching and clinical medicine. Professor Bird is one of the world's experts on the treatment of retinal vascular disease and genetic and degenerative retinal disorders. Professor Bird's expertise has been widely sought after and he has made strategic contributions to the US National Eye Institute, the UK Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, INSERM and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. He has also played a key role in the design and evaluation of numerous clinical trials involving ground-breaking treatments in retinal disease today.
In recognition of Dr. Bird's contributions to the profession of Ophthalmology we acknowledge the debt we all owe to him for his commitment to teaching and education, enabling many of his students to leave their mark on the field of Ophthalmology.
