The Board of Trustees is proud to announce the 2009 Academy Laureate:

Bernard Becker MDBernard Becker, MD
Dr. Becker is recognized as a pioneer in ophthalmic research, clinical care, education and leadership. He is widely accepted as a world expert on the treatment of intraocular pressure regulation and neuroprotection of the optic nerve. Dr. Becker chairded the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine from 1953 to1988. During that time, the department became internationally known both for exceptional research and for teaching. Many residents who trained with Becker now serve as department heads or hold other prominent positions in academic ophthalmology throughout the country.

In recognition of Dr. Becker's contributions to the profession of ophthalmology, we acknowledge the debt we all owe to him for his commitment to teaching and education; he inspired and encouraged many of his students to make significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology.
