Nominations

The Academy is no longer accepting nominations for the 2009 Laureate Recognition Award. We will start accepting nominations for 2010 after the 2009 Joint Meeting.

Distinct from other types of Academy awards, the Laureate Recognition Award recognizes individuals from around the world who have made exceptional scientific contributions to the betterment of eye care, leading to the prevention of blindness and restoration of sight worldwide.

The award may be made at the discretion of the Laureate Recognition Selection Committee for accomplishments of significance either past or present. One award (living) can be awarded annually, however, it is not necessary to present awards each year and the Selection Committee and/or the Board may recommend and vote not to give it at all in any given year.

The nominee: one (living) name will be recommended to Academy's Board of Trustees for approval. Induction as an Academy Laureate will occur during the Opening Session at the Academy's Annual Meeting.

Nomination Process
All nomination materials and supporting letters must be received no later than March 31, 2010. The name of the recipient will be announced in the fall of each year; an award ceremony will take place at the Annual Meeting. The recipient will receive a plaque, medal, Lifetime Academy membership and reimbursement for expenses associated with travel to the award ceremony.

Nominations should call attention to the nominee's achievements and the significance of his/her work as it relates to significant contributions to the profession; individuals who have developed new techniques, a seminal invention or a new treatment accepted worldwide. Nominations for this award should include information on the person or persons nominated (including how to reach them, and news clippings or other substantiating information) and a brief description of how their work stands out as worthy of recognition.

The letters may be sent directly to the Laureate Award Selection Committee by those writing them. Please do not send videos or similar presentations, books or published papers. All submitted materials become property of the Academy and cannot be returned. All nominations forms and letters should be sent to:
