Information for MDs about the AAOE Program

Q: Do I need to be a member of AAOE to attend an instruction course?

A: No. AAOE instruction courses can be purchased by members and non-members.

Q: My administrator attends the meeting with me. Why do I also need to attend the practice management courses?

A: Communication is imperative to the success of your practice. When a physician and administrator attend a program together they can collectively discuss how to integrate the  new information into the practice.

Q: Who presents the material at the AAOE courses?

A: Many of the courses are presented by panel teams made up of one or more physicians, an administrator and a consultant. Panelists understand your challenges, and have developed hands-on solutions to meet your needs.

Q: Are CME credits available for AAOE courses?

A: Yes, all AAOE courses are CME bearing activities.

Q: Can physicians attend the AAOE free programs?

A: Yes, but seating is limited for some programs.

Q: What types of courses are appropriate for physicians to attend?

A: AAOE courses are developed around seven competency areas.  Most courses are appropriate for physicians to attend whether you are a new associate, physician owner or managing physician. Listed below are a few options to consider. For complete course descriptions explore the 2008 Joint Meeting Online Program or visit the AAOE Program of the 2008 Joint Meeting page.

Location: Georgia World Congress Center
Room: B301
Moderator: Shani Lenard

How closely do you partner with your physician or administrator on the important practice decisions? If you are a physician, do you simply give your administrator a "to-do" list, or do you engage your administrator in ongoing discussions that affect your short- and long-term strategic plans? What types of decisions do you delegate to your administrator? If you are an administrator, what actions can you take to earn the trust of your physician(s)? Do you sometimes challenge your physician's recommendations?

In this interactive session, a panel of physicians/administrators who have cultivated strong team dynamics in their respective practices will share how this partnership has benefited their practice and overall professional satisfaction. In this session, participants will engage the panel to discuss the issues, trends, and ideas involved in meaningful physician/administrator relationships. We'll cover these issues: (1) What key elements build physician/administrator relationships? (2) How can a good relationship direct the future of the practice? (3) Best practices, good tips from experience, and traps and pitfalls to avoid. (4) How do I create an environment conducive to positive employee relationships?

Date and Time: Sunday Nov 09, 03:15 PM - 05:30 PM
Location: Georgia World Congress Center
Room: B307
Senior Instructor: Robert A Wade JD

SYNOPSIS:  The Stark Law is in its third iteration, and health care fraud enforcement is on the upswing. This course will examine the newest Stark law changes as well as the current state of Medicare Fraud and Abuse law as it impacts ophthalmic practices–the areas where ophthalmologists are most vulnerable, strategies for staying compliant, and what steps to take if someone slips up.
OBJECTIVE:  Participants will know the new Stark regulations as they impact ophthalmology, the essentials of Medicare Fraud and Abuse law, the areas where ophthalmologists might most likely unknowingly slip up, strategies for avoiding missteps, and a logical process to correct problems when they arise.

COURSE 535  Management Techniques to Maximize Clinical & Practice Quality
Date and Time: Tuesday Nov 11, 09:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Georgia World Congress Center
Room: B304
Senior Instructor: Chandak Ghosh MD MPH

SYNOPSIS:  Traditionally, ophthalmologists have never had to track and report data on quality of care. Because of the rapidly increasing costs of medicine and recent studies that reveal that American health care quality lags behind much of the world's, the federal government, HMOs, PPOs, and insurance companies are all now focusing on clinical data from physicians. CMS’ Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) is just the first step to a future pay-for-performance model.
This course will teach the techniques that management consultants use to help physician practices track and improve both clinical quality and other areas like billing/fiscal, strategic planning, risk management, and staff recruitment and retention. Various examples will be reviewed of solo and multipractitioner practices that grew successfully using these methods.
OBJECTIVE:  Attendees will understand (1) reasons for health care quality reporting, (2) how to determine measures of success for your practice, (3) processes for gathering data, (4) how to analyze clinical outcomes objectively, and (5) how to extend beyond the clinical to improve all facets of your practice.
Target Audience: All
Education Level: Basic
Advance Event Fee: $25.00 ;Onsite Event Fee: $35.00

COURSE 390  EHR and Coding Compliance: What You Need to Know
Date and Time: Monday Nov 10, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Georgia World Congress Center
Room: B303
Senior Instructor: Jeannie Cagle

SYNOPSIS:
Most medical practices assume when they purchase an electronic health records (EHR) system that the compliance and coding aspects of the product have been thoroughly addressed and are totally up to speed. However, that's not always the case! Problems can result from a poorly designed product, lack of vendor support, misuse by the provider, or a misunderstanding of how to use the product. Although the perfect system does not exist, some great options are available that allow for decreases in clinical risk and improve financial performance. This session does not discuss specific products but covers areas where you may be at risk unless you ask the right questions and look for essential components to ensure practice compliance.
OBJECTIVE:  Participants will be able to: Sort through vendor promises to recognize the appropriate system for identifying codes;  Determine if the EHR-provided templates meet coding criteria;  Determine if the printed progress note will withstand audit scrutiny, etc.
Target Audience: All
